The Islands of Vanuatu

Vanuatu is an exotic land of contrasts. On these islands the modern world collides with Stone Age culture. Ash falling from volcanoes drifts down on otherwise tranquil villages. People with a vibrant love for Jesus live within a short walk from closed jungle villages that the gospel has not yet penetrated. Rampant malaria and dengue fever - among the most virile on the globe - are obscured by unparalleled natural beauty.

Known as the New Hebrides until 1980, the Republic of Vanuatu consists of a Y-shaped chain of 83 islands. Most of these are only accessible by boat and outrigger canoe. The ruggedness of the islands coupled with their relative isolation has led to the proliferation of distinct languages and cultures. With a population of 200,000 and over 110 different languages, Vanuatu has the highest language density in the world. This has made it difficult to reach all the peoples of Vanuatu with the good news of Jesus.

Recently, Athey Creek came alongside two like-minded fellowships in Vanuatu. Our desire is to assist them in the work they are doing for the Lord. For example, by assuming a property lease, we have made it possible for Natanara Christian Fellowship to continue holding services. The church met on the campus of Searchlight Bible College until the college’s closure in 2004. Losing the use of this property would have meant the church being forced to close their doors as well. Now, not only are they free to meet, but they are also able to continue moving forward in ministry to others. Their main outreach has been in supporting Fanafo Christian Fellowship, located about an hour away by truck. Both fellowships are situated on an island named Espirtitu Santo, which means Holy Spirit. This Island was named by an early Spanish explorer who was the first to spot the island in the 1600’s. It has been aptly named because the Lord is doing a significant work by his Spirit on this island. To learn more about these churches and what the Lord is doing through them please follow the links to each fellowship.
